Reaping the Benefits of the Aerospace Growth Curve in China

China’s aviation industry is driving regional growth and benefiting from the upsurge in confidence as global markets recover. As China consolidates its position as one of the world’s largest markets for new aircraft, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China is moving ever closer to the introduction of the C919 aircraft. At the same time, investment in airports and other infrastructure continues apace. This begs questions such as how will new funding initiatives support the continued expansion of China’s aerospace industries? And what are the critical technology developments that will support China’s ambitions for a world-class airliner industry?

This session will cover these issues in detail. Understand how China will be structuring its aerospace sector for medium- and long-term sustainable growth. Hear more about how market-led funding opportunities can support aerospace development. Discover the next steps that will take the C919 twinjet closer to its service entry target of 2016. Experts will also discuss how China’s blueprint for aviation infrastructure will shape up over the next decade and beyond.

Engineering a Regional MRO Powerhouse in China

With China leading the way in fleet and MRO development, how are its maintenance specialists exploiting this growth? Tantalising growth opportunities are on offer in the engine and component areas, particularly if the country’s MRO shops can attract global third party business. But what need’s to be done to meet international service support expectations? How is China working to improve its parts repair capability? Next-generation aircraft will require greater investment in technology, know-how and documentation compared to older aircraft, how will this investment stack up against the business opportunities? And how are China’s MRO specialists improving the environmental impact of operations, creating efficiencies and reducing costs? These questions will be explored by leaders from China’s MRO sector and their international peers.

Keeping Growth on Track – Meeting the Infrastructure Needs of the Future

India continues to be one of the fastest-growing aerospace markets in the world and is likely to require around 400 airports and 3,000 passenger aircraft over the next decade. At the same time the prolific boom in air travel across Asia is increasing the pressure on the region’s infrastructure, with congestion on the ground and in the air an inevitable consequence. How are airport developments in the region gearing to meet this challenge? Furthermore, such unprecedented growth creates safety challenges for the region. Given the dominance of bilateral agreements between Asian countries and the lack of one cohesive geopolitical structure, how can the region reach agreement on a seamless, harmonised interoperable airspace?

This session, which brings together experts with visionary strategies to expand Asia’s aviation backbone, will review new airport development and further expansion of existing hubs. Hear more about how India is gearing up for another round of aviation growth and what the country will need to do to achieve its targets. The discussion will include how public private partnerships are helping to accelerate growth and will consider what other benefits can be leveraged. We examine whether IATA’s vision of a pan-Asian managed network offers the solution for harmonisation of air traffic management. And we look at case studies for successful safety management.

The Future of Aviation – Emerging Issues and Solutions

What are the emerging technologies that will improve the next generation of aircraft? We take an in-depth look at the latest advances in materials and manufacturing that will be supporting aerospace innovation. Bio fuels and alternative fuel projects have the potential to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint and bring down costs. But producing these fuels on a sustainable commercial scale remains a significant challenge. Experts leading the way in composite and advanced materials development will discuss incorporating these technologies into the manufacturing process, plus the issues around health monitoring of advanced structures. This is also your chance to hear from those leading research into alternative fuels, with Cathay Pacific explaining what the airline customer will need from the industry to support its sustainable development plan. Advances in fuel, energy and aerodynamics will continue to be combined to offer increased performance and value. This is an opportunity to learn, from the cutting edge of research, about technologies that will inspire aerospace engineering in the future.

Maximising Airspace Capacity

With traffic pressures on the Pearl River Delta and Mainland China routes continuing unabated, what best-practice initiatives are available now to ease the burden of delays, extended flight times and extra fuel costs? How can technology help? How are regional green air traffic initiatives moving from vision to reality? And what are the opportunities for Asia to leapfrog the development curve by implementing best practices from Europe and the USA?

Air space management specialists will evaluate the potential for automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) to increase air space efficiency in South East Asia and how implementation plans are progressing. This will also be an opportunity to hear how the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (ASPIRE) and Indian Ocean Strategic Partnership to Reduce Emissions (INSPIRE) are creating efficiencies and savings. And international ATM experts will be unveiling the lessons from their experience of optimising their airspace.

Essential Airline Tactics to Win the Global Economic Recovery Race

Asian carriers are chalking up healthy increases in passenger traffic thanks to the robust economic recovery in the region. But how can this momentum be maintained? Limitations on cross-border activity, combined with pressures to consolidate, mean partnerships in every shape and form – alliances, joint ventures, code shares – will be more important than ever. At the same time South East Asia’s rapidly-growing low cost carriers are inking new deals and new ventures that snap at the heels of the network players. Outside the region, the European Union’s emissions trading scheme, in force from 2012, will reach way beyond Europe’s borders in its impact for Asian airlines.

This session asks if airlines are simply resuming the traditional business cycle or if there is an opportunity to develop a more sustainable approach to airline economics and healthier profits. Hear what airlines bosses and aviation analysts have to say. And we will also learn about the new relationships that will enable airlines to address the competitive pressures of the up turn. As competition ramps up, what will be the impact on legacy and low cost models alike? What will the low cost carriers do next to keep their operations agile, efficient and innovative? Low cost airline leaders discuss the shape of things to come for short haul operations. Finally, the session reviews the EU’s emission scheme and what it will mean for Asian carriers.

Industry and University Partnerships in Aerospace

Research and development creates numerous challenges for the aerospace industry. Not only is it a significant proportion of the cost, the time scales and facilities required to develop new aircraft or engines are greater than in other R&D-led industries such as consumer electronics. In addition, the demands placed on advanced simulation/modelling technologies, analysis and design, plus integrating aerodynamics, structures, materials, avionics and control require strong links to be forged between fundamental scientific research, engineering design and testing. The investment, from both the financial and the skills perspectives, is significant and no one company can conduct the full range of R&D in-house. Industry and universities are already fostering and enhancing collaboration, including student internships, faculty visits, consulting, and direct project funding. This session will brings together colleagues from across the industry to share their experiences and offer ideas on how to further enhance these partnerships.
